2 killed, 10 hurt in road crash

Two persons were killed and 10 others injured in a collision between a bus and a truck in Gulla Monsur area on Dhaka-Bangabandhu Jamuna Bridge highway in Mirzapur upazila yesterday morning.
The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.
Officer-in-Charge of Gorai highway police Khalilur Rahman said the accident took place when a bus collided head-on with a truck and turned turtle, leaving two bus passengers dead on the spot 10 others injured. The injured passengers have been admitted to Mirzapur Kumuddini Medical College Hospital.
Man dies from attack wounds
Kushtia: A farmer, who was injured in an attack by some labourers at a jute wholesale market at Hakimpur Futanibazar in Daulatpur upazila on Tuesday, died at Kushtia Sadar Hospital yesterday morning, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Lalon Hossain, 25, son of Tasen Ali, a resident of Pochamadia village of the upazila.
Police said Lalon had gone to a jute wholesale shop of one Hamidul Islam for selling jute around 5.00pm on Tuesday. An altercation ensued between Lalon and some labourers at the market. At one stage, the labouers beat Lalon up mercilessly, leaving him critically injured. He was admitted to Kushtia Sadar Hospital where he succumbed to his injures around 8.00am yesterday.
Officer-in-charge of Daulatpur Police Station Khabir Ahmed confirmed the death.
4 held as militant suspects
Sherpur: Police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in a joint drive arrested four young people from Hariakona village in Sribardi upazila on Tuesday night for their suspected link to militancy, reports UNB.
The arrestees were identified as Al Momen, 20, and Shariful Alam, 22, both residents of Sadar upazila in Netrakona district, and Shahidul Islam, 22, a resident of Chittagong and Shnehashish Ray, 21, resident of Dinajpur.
The arrestees were taken to the district Detective Branch of police office for interrogation.
OC of DB police Mahfuzar Rahman said tipped off, a joint team of police and BGB members conducted a raid on the house of one Alamgir at Hariakona village and arrested the four around 9.30pm.
9 lakh Yaba pills recovered
Cox’s Bazar: Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard seized nine lakh pieces of Yaba tablets worth around Tk 27 crore from Shahparir Dwip on the Bay of Bengal in Teknaf upazila on Tuesday evening, reports UNB.
Coast Guard sources said a patrol team of the Coast Guard’s Teknaf station, led by Lieutenant Nafiur Rahman, commander of Teknaf Station, challenged a boat in Shahparir Dwip area at around 7:30 pm.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the suspected smugglers fled the scene leaving the boat on the coast. Searching the boat, the coast guards recovered 9,00,000 pieces of Yaba tablets.
One held with crude bombs
NATORE: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-5 arrested a man with crude bombs from Chakala Dhakta village under Gurudaspur upazila yesterday afternoon, reports BSS.
On a tip-off, a team of the elite force conducted a raid at a home of the village and arrested Shariful Islam, 24, and also seized 10 cocktails from his possession. Later, Shariful was handed over to Gurudaspur police. A case was filed.
Man electrocuted
Benapole: A man died from electrocution at Satbaria village in Keshabpur upazila of Jessore on Tuesday night, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Sahabuddin Biswas, 36, of the village. Local people said Sahabuddin came in contact with a live electric wire while he was repairing a satellite dish line at the village at night.
Later, he was rushed to Keshabpur upazila health complex where doctors declared him dead.
Two children drown
Sylhet: Two minor girls drowned in a haor (wetland) at Hotamara village in Jamalganj upazila on Tuesday afternoon, reports UNB.
The deceased were identified as Tania, 7, daughter of Nurunnabi, and Tomalika, 7, daughter of Sajul Hoque, residents of Hotamara village—both students of Hotamara Government Primary School.
Quoting family sources, OC of Jamalganj Police Station M Atikur Rahman said the two children were playing on the bank of a haor adjacent to their house in the afternoon. At one stage, Tania slipped into the haor when Tomalika jumped into there to rescue her friend. Later, local people recovered their floating bodies from the haor.
Sale of Tk 10 per kg rice begins in Joypurhat
JOYPURHAT: Selling of rice under ration to the poor at Tk 10 per kg began on Tuesday in all five upazilas of the district, reports BSS.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Aminul Islam formally inaugurated the rice selling programme at Bambu union under sadar upazila of the district.
Vice-president of Zila Awami League and Bambu UP chairman Molla Shamsul Islam, member of Zila Awami League Mizanur Rahman and district food controller Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury, among others, were present on the occasion.
Upazila food department sources said under the programme 36,387 card holders will get 30-kg rice in a month. Beneficiaries have expressed their gratitude to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for launching the programme.
