‘Social safety net effectively cutting poverty’

Nilphamari: The government's massive social safety-net programmes have been cutting poverty effectively to improve livelihoods and life standard of the distressed people, including women, reports BSS.
The views were expressed at an orientation meeting jointly organised by the upazila administration and upazila women affairs office at Syedpur upazila parisahd auditorium in Nilphamari on Tuesday afternoon.
Members of Syedpur Upazila VGD Beneficiary Selection Committee participated in the meeting to select beneficiaries of the Vulnerable Group Development (VGD) programme for the 2016-2017 cycles.
With Syedpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abu Saleh Md Musa Jongi in the chair, Upazila Women Affairs Officer Nurun Nahar Shahzadi delivered welcome speech in the meeting narrating the government strategies and policies in selecting VGD beneficiaries. The UNO called upon all concerned for working with utmost sincerity in making the VGD programme successful by making the vulnerable group distressed women self-reliant.
Panel Chairman of Syedpur upazila parishad Azmal Hossain, female upazila Vice-chairman Rawnak Jahan Rinu, upazila Muktijoddha Commander Ekramul Haque Sarker were present as the special guests.
Nurun Nahar said the distressed women aged up to 50 years would be included in the VGD programme while preference would be given to those distressed women having two children.
She said distressed mothers of the school-going female students would also be included in the VGD programme on condition of not arranging marriage of their daughters before their 18-year age.
Each of the beneficiary distressed women would get 30-kg rice or wheat every month for two years, she added.
The meeting was informed that a total of 2,819 distressed women of all five unions under Syedpur upazila would be beneficiaries of the VGD programme for the 2016-2017 cycle.
Upazila level government officials and chairmen of different union parishads under Syedpur upazila also spoke.
