RANGPUR: Free flow of information and creating awareness on the Rights to Information (RTI) Act-2009 among the common people, including young generation, could largely contribute in building a corruption-free society, reports BSS.
Anti-corruption activists and members of school level Integrity Units made these observations at a post procession rally held on the Deputy Commissioner's Office premises here yesterday.
The District Corruption Prevention Committee (CPC) organised the programmes in observance of the International Rights to Information Day-2016 with the theme of "Tatthya Pele Mukti Mele, Sonar Bangla Swapna Fole".
The District Combined Office of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and RDRS Bangladesh assisted in arranging the programmes under Justice Reform and Corruption Prevention project being funded by German Development Cooperation.
Members of the District CPC, Integrity Units and Advisory Councils of different schools, teachers, women activists and civil society members participated in the programmes.
With President of District CPC Professor Mozammel Haque in the chair, Deputy Director of Rangpur District Combined Office of ACC Mozahar Ali Sarder attended the rally as the chief guest.
Assistant Director of District Combined Office of ACC Atikur Rahman, General Secretary Akbar Hossain of the District CPC, its member Banamali Paul and Senior Reporter of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha Mamun Islam also spoke.
The chief guest urged officials in government as well as non-government departments, organisations to work with commitments in disseminating  necessary information to the common people as dictated by the law.
While narrating about the RTI Act-2009, Mamun Islam said enactment of the Act was a big success of the government as the law factually turned into an effective tool to ensure the peoples' right to know.
"If free flow of information was ensured, transparency and accountability would work to reduce corruption in establishing good governance at all levels," he said.
Professor Mozammel Haque termed the RTI Act as the major tool in building a knowledge-based society and suggested the common people to acquire proper knowledge about the Act for ensuring accountability and transparency everywhere.
Meanwhile, in Chapainawabganj, district Administration arranged a colourful rally on the occasion with the association of the Committee of Concerned Citizen (CCC) and Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB). The rally was taken out from the Deputy Commissioner's office premises in the morning. After parading the main roads of the town it ended at the same venue.
In Narail, district administration staged a procession in the town in the morning. A discussion was also held at the Conference Room of the Deputy Commissioner where DC Helal Mahmud Sharif presided over it while district Education Officer Naresh Chandra Das and district Information Officer Mehedi Hassan spoke. The speakers said the people have right to know about government offices. They could be aware of their rights by the free flow of information that would also help them to take decision.
In Gaibandha, district administration in cooperation with Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) chalked the elaborate programmes.
In the morning, a colourful procession led by DC M Abdus Samad was brought out from Independence Square and ended in front of Zila Shilpakala Academy parading the main roads of the town.
Later, a discussion was also held with additional deputy commissioner Mohammad Mizanur Rahman in the chair.
As information is an important tool of empowering people, the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has passed the Right to Information (RTI) Act 2009 and established Information Commission to implement the Act, the speakers said.
