Woman to die for murdering daughter in Rangpur

RANGPUR:  A court yesterday sentenced a woman to death for strangling her minor daughter to death in Joydeb Sarkerpara village under Gangachara upazila in the district about 12 years ago, reports BSS.
Additional District and Sessions Judge of Rangpur Court-2 Abu Jafar Mohammad Kamruzzaman handed down the verdict in presence of the convicted woman. The convicted is Rahela Begum, 30, wife of Lavlu Mian of the same village. According to prosecution, Rahela Begum strangled her one-year-old daughter Lucky Akhter at night on September 12 in 2004 following family feud with her husband. Later, Rahela threw away the body to a nearby pond in the village. Being informed by the locals, Gangachara Thana police recovered the body on the next day and conducted its autopsy at Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue. Police initially filed an unnatural death (UD) case in this connection with Gangachara Thana on September 13 in 2004. Later, Lavlu Mian filed a murder case accusing his wife in this connection with Gangachara Thana on October 1 in the same year after the post mortem report confirmed that Lucky was strangled to death.
After investigation into the case, Gangachara Thana police submitted chargesheet against the accused woman to the learned court in 2005 when the process of trial began.
After examining witnesses and evidences of the case during the long hearing, the learned court found accused Rahela Begum guilty beyond any doubt and announced the verdict in her presence. 
Additional Public Prosecutor of Rangpur Advocate Faruk Md Rezaul Karim stood for the state while senior lawyer Advocate Afzalul Haque defended the accused.
