A pro-BNP intellectual yesterday suggested the government not to form a search committee like previous ones to form the new Election Commission. “There is no need to form search committee like the previous times. It cannot be accepted that the president will appoint some people who are loyal to the government,” said former Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Prof Emajuddin Ahmed. He was speaking at a memorial meeting at the Jatiya Press Club to mark the 4th death anniversary of eminent journalist Ataus Samad.
“If the government wants to form any search committees, they must sit across the table with different political parties,” he said.
The former DU VC called upon the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to restore the democracy in the country. “You (PM) have done a lot of good jobs. Do one more good job…Please restore the democracy that has been lost,” he said.
“If you do it, you will stay in the minds of people for long. We will be waiting to see it,” said Emajuddin.
Bangladesh Youth Forum, a social organisaiton, organised the meeting with its adviser Maj (retd) Mizanur Rahman in the chair. BNP leader Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Jatiya Party (Kazi Zafar) leader Ahsan Habib Linkon, and Abu Naser Rahmatullah, among others, were present at the meeting.
