PM’s promised bridge over Paira

‘Construction work to start in 18 months’

Road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader yesterday said that the construction of a bridge over the Paira river, as promised by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to a schoolboy, will begin within 18 months. “We’ve received a letter from the Prime Minister’s Office regarding the bridge over the Paira river. We’re taking necessary steps to implement the Prime Minister’s pledge,” he said while inaugurating the newly built Gabtali-Shinnirtek road in Mirpur. Shirshendu Biswas, a student of class IV of Jubili High School, in August had written a letter to Hasina, asking her to built a bridge over the Paira river so that he could use it on his way to school from his village. In reply, the Prime Minister assured Shirshendu that she would have the bridge built. Obaidul Quader said a team of the Bridges Division would visit the proposed site at Mirzaganj next week. “We'll start the feasibility study soon to construct the bridge. The construction works will begin within 18 months after finalising all the tasks,” the minister added. Earlier, Obaidul Quader inaugurated the Gabtali-Shinnirtek road, which has been built at a cost of Tk. 92 crore. People from Tongi, Uttara, Ashulia and its adjacent areas could use the road through the Mirpur flood protection embankment to Gabtali and Mirpur. The minister expressed hope that it would also help reduce the pressure of vehicles in the city.
