Three luxury cars seized
Sylhet: Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate has seized three luxurious cars worth Tk 8 crore from Sylhet city and Moulvibazar district on charge of using those misusing the carnet de passage facility, reports UNB.
Briefing reporters at the CIID Sylhet office yesterday, its Director General Dr Mainul Khan said a CIID team seized a Mitsubishi jeep from Sreemangal upazila of Moulvibazar on September 2 while another Nissan 300ZX jeep from Paton village of the same district on September 5.
In another drive, the team seized a Jaguar S-type car from Londoni road area of Sylhet city on September 22, he said.
However, the vehicle owners could not be arrested, he said. Mainul Khan said the vehicles were brought to the country using the carnet de passage facility but those were not taken back. He also said the owners can take the vehicles back by repaying duty. “Or else, legal action will be taken against them,” he said.
Road crash kills one in Narail
NARAIL: A man was killed and two others were injured in a road accident in Auria Tollghar area under Sadar upazila yesterday, reports BSS.
The deceased was Waliar Rahman, 55, a resident of Paloidanga village of the upazila.
Police said the accident occurred when a bus hit a rickshaw van in the area yesterday afternoon, leaving van passenger Waliar dead on the spot and two others injured.
The injured were sent to Sadar hospital.
Officer-in-Charge of Sadar police Delwar Hossain confirmed the incident.
1 to die, 4 get life for murder
BAGERHAT: A court here yesterday sentenced a man to death and four others to life imprisonment for committing robbery and killing a man at Phulbari in Sadar upazila in 2011, reports BSS.
The court also fined the convicted persons Tk 20,000 each.
Additional Session Judge M Zakaria Hossain pronounced the verdict.
The convict who got the death penalty was Sohel Sheikh, 27, son of Amir Sheikh of Sankidanga village under Morelganj upazila of the district.
The other convicts were Alamin alias Tuhin of Tutpara area in Khulna city, Sohag alias Jahid of Bagmara village, Jasim of Srirampur village in Rupsa upazila and Monir Sheikh, a resident of Gaugram under Batiaghata upazila in Khulna district.
Money given among 17 patients
JOYPURHAT: The government distributed Tk 85 lakh as an one-time donation among 17 patients afflicted with different diseases in the district in the 2015-2016 fiscal.
The Department of Social Service (DSS) Joypurhat distributed the money among the patients of cancer, kidney disease, liver disease, heart disease and paralysed patient under its Assistance Giving programme.
Ministry of Social Welfare has been distributing the donation since 1997-98 fiscal year through the Department of Social Service among the helpless and poor patients for the development of their livelihood and social security.
Assistant Director of DSS Nur Mohammad said donation distribution programme for the patients is a successful initiative of the present government.
17 arrested while returning from India

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh rescued 17 Bangladeshi nationals, including five women, while they were returning home through Daulatpur border in Benapole on Sunday night.
The detainees hail from Khulna, Barisal and Narail district.
Jahangir Alom, company commander of Daulatpur camp of BGB battalion-21 said based on secret information a team of the border guards conducted a drive in the area at 11 pm and arrested them while they were entering into the country without valid documents. Later, they were handed over to Benapole Port Police station. A case was filed in this connection.
Two held with 13 geckos

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members arrested two people along with 13 geckos from Moshimnagar in Manirampur upazila on Sunday afternoon.
The arrestees were identified as Azizur Rahman, 42, of Moshimnagar village and Mizanur Rahman, 60, of Noali village in the upazila.
Tipped off that a gang of gecko smugglers gathered at the house of Azizur Rahman, a team of RAB-6 conducted a drive there around 2:50 pm and arrested the duo, said company commander of the RAB battalion in Jessore Major Abdullah Al Mehedi who led the raid.
According to the confessional statement Azizur, the elite force team recovered 13 geckos from a wooden box kept in his bedroom.
A case was filed with Manirampur Police Station in this regard.
Youth held over rape allegation
Chuadanga: Police arrested the prime accused in connection with gang rape of a girl from Bus Terminal area of Sadar upazila on Sunday night, reports UNB.
The arrestee was identified as Sabuj Ali, 22, a resident of Satgari village of the upazila.
Police said a case was filed with the Sadar Police Station accusing four young men including Sabuj in connection with the gang rape incident on April 12.
Sabuj went into hiding after the filing of the case, said Tozammel Haque, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station. Police arrested Sabuj from the area around 10.30am, added the OC.
