58,406 rural people avail legal services in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI: More than 58,406 people, most of them are women, received legal services free of cost in three upazilas of Rajshahi and Naogaon districts during the last one year and eight months, reports BSS.With these initiatives, the beneficiaries became aware about their legal rights that are helping them establish their confidence on how to get the legal services whenever and wherever they are needed. The activities also contributed to activating the mediation and alternative dispute resolution system.
Brotee Samaj Kolyan Sangstha (BSKS) under its project ‘Protecting the Vulnerable through Community Legal Services’ provided the legal support under the Community Legal Services (CLS) programme funded by UKAID through Maxwell Stamp-PLC.
These were revealed at a media consultation held at a city restaurant today.
In his welcome speech, Shashanka Boron Roy, coordinator of the project, said main thrust of the project is to improve access to justice and existing legal service procedure for un-served population like poor and extreme poor Adibashi concentrated areas in Rajshahi.
Advocate Ashique Iqbal, Regional Coordinator and Legal Advocacy Officer of BSKS, gave an overview of his organisation’s legal aid services. Editor of Daily Sonar Desh Akbarul Hassan Millat and Training and Communication Coordinator of BSKS Razendra Kumar Das also spoke on the occasion.
Shashanka Boron Roy said the project is being implemented with the main thrust on improving access to justice and existing legal service procedure for unserved population including the remotest ones like the ethnic minorities.
The project attained success in making linkages between other government and non-government organisations concerned for better service delivery. Some 604 legal aid awareness meetings were held besides arranging union legal clinics.
