Courtney Walsh’s first match as the bowling coach of a national team may have been disappointing but his bowlers came up with a stellar performance to save his face.

He heaped praise on captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza to lead exemplary, specially when nerve got the better of the team.
“I think the captain bowled very well and led well from the front,” said Walsh. “We were not nervous but we were concerned. We were confident that once the guys did well, we had a good chance. To come back and win the game, it was just fantastic.”
But what pleased him was the effort of the two fast bowlers—Taskin Ahmed and Rubel Hossain—who had things to prove on their comeback match. While Taskin came back after having his bowling action tested, Rubel had recovered from the injury.
Walsh didn’t hesitate to give Shakib his due credit, stating that the ace all-rounder brought the side back to the game.
“The two guys bowled extremely well in the last two overs. Shakib bowled the match-changing over and it set things up. The other guys got confidence and the run-rate went up. It was a great team performance.
“I thought he (Taskin) did very well. He was under a bit of pressure before the game. He was reported by the ICC so to come into a game of this nature after not playing for ten months. I think he was trying a little bit too hard at the beginning. But he delivered what we needed him to do. Credit to him for how he came back. He could have had a completely bad day and that could have cost us the match.”
Bangladesh senior player Mahmudullah Riyad however said they had the belief on Taskin and Rubel to deliver at the death overs because both of them had got the skill of delivering yorkers consistently.
“It was the time when we needed bowlers to give yorkers at a stretch. Though both of them were erratic at the beginning of the game, we kept belief on them. We knew they could do their best in that moment. And they came back nicely.”
Walsh at the end was happy for the effort of the players. “We were saying inside the dressing room that if we can get two good overs and if those overs had wickets, the game could change. We weren’t sharp in the field like we usually are but once we started taking wickets, we knew we had a chance.”
“We sent messages to try to get him to relax and remember what we were doing in practice. Everyone tried to fit in as best as they could. I think everybody was keen because we hadn’t played for a while. We were match rusty. The boys turned it around and did very well.”
