Home ministry asks DCs to complete trials with the help of local public prosecutors

The home ministry has asked deputy commissioners (DCs) to complete the trials of 459 prisoners lodged in different jails with the help of local public prosecutors (PPs). For the last five years until July this year, 459 prisoners lodged in 57 jails have not had a trial, said sources in the home ministry and the jail department.
The authorities concerned apparently could not complete the trials due to the absence of witnesses, the sources added. Senior home secretary Dr Md Mozammel Haque Khan told The Independent that they are trying to complete the trials of these prisoners. “There are many poor prisoners who can't afford a lawyer. In some cases, there are no witnesses,” he said.  “That is why we asked the DCs to appoint local PPs to help them complete the trials,” he added.
Sources said the highest number of prisoners without trial, 61, are lodged in Chittagong Central Jail. There are 29 in Mymensing Central Jail, 34 in Kashimpur Central Jail-2, 21 in the High-security Central Jail, 15 in Narayanganj Central Jail, 16 in Rajshahi Central Jail, 12 in Dinajpur Central Jail, 20 in Cox’s Bazar Central Jail, 14 in Sylhet Central Jail, 11 in Khulna Central Jail, 13 in Satkhira Central Jail, 10 in Chuadanga Central Jail and eight in Kishoreganj Central Jail.
According to the statistics provided by jail authorities, 11 central jails in Brahmanbaria, Kustia, Meherpur, Jhalkathi, Sherpur, Gazipur, Rajbari, Gopalganj, Madaripur, Lalmanirhat and Panchagarh have no prisoners without a trial.
