237 cartons of cigarettes seized
Members of Armed Police Battalion (APBn) seized 237 cartons of illegally imported foreign brand cigarettes worth about Tk 2.84 lakh at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in the capital early Saturday.
Tanjina Akhter, assistant superintendent of police of ABPn, said the passenger, identified as Mir Mohammad Robiul Hosen,35, a resident of Hathajari upazila in Chittagong district, landed at the airport from Arabia Airlines flight G9-513 from Sharjah around 5:30am. On suspicion, APBn members challenged him and recovered Essy (Light) cigarettes in 221 cartons and Essy (Special Gold) cigarettes in 16 cartons searching his luggage after scanning.
Four fake DB men arrested
Members of Detective Branch (DB) arrested four people for allegedly impersonating its members from the capital’s Motijheel area on Saturday night.
Identities of the arrestees could not be known immediately. Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Masudur Rahman said acting on a tip-off, a team of DB police conducted a drive in the area and arrested the four who used to impersonate DB men. The law enforcers also recovered walkie-talkie sets, handcuffs, DB jackets and toy pistols from their possession.
Minister leaves for Australia
A five-member delegation led by Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan is scheduled to leave the capital yesterday night for Australia to visit the Sydney port for gathering knowledge to turn the Chittagong and Mongla ports as international standard. The other members of the team are Mongla Port Authority Chairman Rear Admiral Riazuddin Ahmed, Chittagong Port Authority Chairman Rear Admiral M Khaled Iqbal, Joint Secretary of Shipping Ministry MM Tarikul Islam and Chittagong Port Authority Secretary M Omar Faruq, said a press release. The minister is scheduled to return home on October 1.
Siblings arrested with hemp
Armed Police Battalion (APBN) members arrested a man and his sister along with 10kg of hemp from a slum in Tongi railway station area in Gazipur city yesterday morning.
The arrested were identified as Nasim, 26, son of late Ali Hossain , hailed from Charfasion area of Bhola district and his sister Jarina, 45. Commanding officer of APBN and additional superintendent of police Dr Kaniz Hossain Jahan said on secret information, a team of APBN conducted a raid in Keranirtek slum at Tongi railway station area of Gazipur city on Sunday morning. They arrested Nasim and Jarina from a room of the slum along with 10kg of Hemp. APBN sources said, the arrested persons rented a room and they had been selling different types of drugs at the area.
78 ‘drug peddlers’ held
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) yesterday arrested 78 drug peddlers in separate drives in the capital and recovered different types of drugs from their possession.
According to a DMP release, different units of detective branch (DB) and different police stations carried out the raids throughout the capital. They recovered 1,157 yaba tablets, 461.255 grams of heroin, 9.350 KG of ganja, 120 bottles of phensedyl, 10 liters of liquor, 20 cans of beer and 417 sedative injections during the drives.
8,411 yaba tablets seized
Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) in a series of overnight special drives arrested at least 60 people from different areas in the city during the last 24 hours on Saturday.
Police also seized 8,411 pieces of yaba tablets during the drives, a CMP press release said. A total of six cases were filed in these connections. Besides, CMP and Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) filed 580 cases against different types of vehicles including CNG-run auto rickshaws for not obeying the metropolitan rules in the city during the last 24-hour. Police also seized 23 vehicles including 20 CNG-run auto rickshaws during the drives, police said.
