Husband among 3 to walk gallows for killing wife

RAJSHAHI: Three persons, including husband, were sentenced to death by a court here yesterday for burning his wife Shathi Yeasmin to death in the city around three and half years back, reports BSS.
The convicts are Md Arif, 28, and his two sister-in-laws Hanifa Hassan Iva, 32, and Mahfuza Jannati Laiva, 30. They were also fined Taka 25,000 each. They are the residents of Sadhur More area under Boalia Police Station in the metropolis.
According to the prosecution story, in brief, is that husband Arif used to torture his wife Sathi, 23, demanding a motorbike from her parents as dowry since their marriage in 2011.
Failing to get the motorbike, Arif in connivance with his two sister-in-laws set her on fire after pouring kerosene on the body while she was watching television on April 3, 2012.
She was immediately rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where the attending doctors declared her dead after a few minutes of admission.
Father of the victim Sazzad Ali had lodged a case with the concerned police station. On completion of investigation, police pressed charges against three of them including Arif.
After examining recorded depositions of the enlisted prosecution witnesses and relevant evidence Judge-1 of Special Tribunal for Prevention of Repression Against Women and Children Monsur Alam found the convicts guilty and pronounced the verdict in a crowded courtroom around 2-30 pm.
Special Public Prosecutor Morzina Khatun conducted the case on behalf of the state while Advocate Ersad Ali Isha defended the accused.
