The international relations department of Rajshahi University (RU) is trying its best to broaden the horizon of students even amid several infrastructural hurdles.
The department, opened in 2015, is located on the third floor of Ismail Hossain Sirajee Bhavan.
University sources said only three rooms are allocated to the department: one for classes, while the remaining two are reserved for teachers and seminars.
At present, the department has 72 students with three teachers.
Owing to the paucity of classrooms to accomodate all the students at once, the teachers teach in two shifts. The first shift is from 8.30am to 11.00am, while the other is from 2pm to 4.30pm.
Prof. Abul Kashem, head of the international relations department, said that the department needs more textbooks, reference books and journals. “We're providing print-outs from the Internet to students at present,” he added.
“We heard that the university authorities will allocate a new classroom on the top floor of Sirajee Bhavan next year. If no additional room is available soon, it'll be very difficult to conduct classes with new students in the coming session,” he said.
He also said that the department needs nine acres of land to set up a research centre. The department also needs a sophisticated computer lab with various modern facilities, he added.
The department currently offers a four-year honours course run in English.
While a degree in international relations does not lead to a specific career option, anyone doing a major in the subject can pursue careers in government positions, journalism, law, social work, international business, and teaching and research.
