Judicious use of pesticide on fruits, vegetables stressed

RAJSHAHI: Judicious use of pesticides on the farming fields of vegetables and other crops is very important for the sake of maintaining sound public and soil health alongside protecting environmental balance, reports BSS.
Non-judicious and indiscriminate use of pesticides is harmful for soil health, public health, biodiversity and environment as a whole. There is no alternative to large-scale promotion of bio and organic pest management system to mitigate the problem.
The observations came in the inaugural session of a two-day international seminar titled “Botanical Pesticide and Environmental Sustainability” held in the Senate Building of Rajshahi University yesterday.
Institute of Environmental Sciences (IES) organized the seminar where more than 150 scientists and researchers from home and abroad are taking part.
Above 100 research papers are also likely to be presented in six academic and technical sessions.
Vice-chancellor of RU Prof Md Mijanuddin addressed the session as the chief guest while Pro-VC Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan and Treasurer Prof Sayen Uddin spoke as the special guests with Prof Sultan-Ul-Islam, Director of IES, in the chair. Secretary of seminar organizing committee Prof Abul Kalam Azad welcomed the participants.
Prof Mijanuddin stressed the need for bringing all the farmers and other growers concerned under adequate training and awareness programme on an urgent basis so that they could be debarred from the malpractice. “We have no way but to motivate the farmers and others concerned in this regard to maintain a sound environment for ensuring a healthy nation,” he said.
He said there are countless microorganisms which are beneficial for boosting crops and vegetables production besides maintaining the environment. But the indiscriminate uses of pesticides always destruct the beneficial insects, he added.
The malpractice is not only creating serious environmental pollution but also creating health hazard, he added. Prof Mijan added that the policy planners and others concerned should come forward towards arranging time-fitting training for the farmers as a whole.
