ICT to hear two more 1971 war cases in Nov

STAFF REPORTER

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) yesterday fixed November 2 for the hearing of the framing of charges against five men of Moulvibazar for crimes against humanity committed during the War of Liberation in 1971.
The accused are Shamsul Hossain Torofdar alias Ashraf, Md Nesar Ali, Yunus Ahmed, Ojayer Ahmed Chowdhury and Mobarok Mian. Prosecutor Abul Kalam said that the tribunal fixed the date following a prayer made by the prosecution to frame charges against them.
According to the case details, Shamsul was the local Al-Badr commander, while Nesar was a local Razakar commander in 1971. All of them have been accused of mass killings, abduction, and torture during the Liberation War.
Ojayer, 60, and Yunus, 70, are now behind barrs, while the rest are on the run. They were arrested in Moulvibazar on October 13 last year, after the tribunal issued warrants against them. The ICT’s investigation wing submitted its report in January this year.
The prosecution has also brought charges against two Razakars of Mymensingh for their alleged involvement in wartime offences. Prosecutor Hrishikesh Saha said, “We have brought charges of genocide, murder, and mass rape against them.”
He identified the two accused as Wajiuddin, 70, and Riajuddin Fakir, 65. The latter was arrested on August 11, 2015. Both hail from Phulbaria upazila of Mymensingh. The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Anwarul Haque, has set November 22 as the date for the hearing of that petition.
