The government yesterday asked the authorities of public universities to take a written test, along with oral exam, for appointment of teachers to curb irregularities in the recruitment process and make a proper assessment of the applicant's merit.
The Ministry of Education published a notification on its website dated April 13, 2016, signed by deputy secretary Laila Arjumand Banu, and sent to the secretary of the University Grants Commission.
Earlier, applicants had to sit only for an oral exam for the post of public university teachers and police verification was also not needed.
The government circular recommended two things: First, if public universities recruit teachers without police or intelligence verification, there are chances that candidates involved in anti-government activities may be appointed. Verification by police and intelligence agencies must be done before finalising the list of recruited teachers and officers.
Second, if only oral exams are taken, there might be chances of irregularities. If the written test is taken along with the oral exam, it will help assess the merit of applicants and reduce chances of irregularities. The ministry has requested the universities concerned to take steps and inform the government.
