Light-trap technology for Aman field in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA: Light-Trap Technology is being applied by department of agriculture extension (DAE) here to detect the presence of the insects particularly the harmful ones in the paddy field of the district, reports BSS.
Office sources said the department has taken up an initiative to apply the technology at five spots of each of the 249 blocks in all the seven upazilas of the district to detect the presence of the harmful insects at the paddy field and to do next course of action after finding the insects.
To avoid the farmers from the unnecessary expense and save the environment from the pollution is another objective of applying the technology, sources said.
Accordingly, the technology is being applied at the blocks of the district at the arrangement of the respective sub assistant agriculture officer (SAAO) here in presence of the farmers.
On Tuesday evening, the technology was applied on the premises of Agriculture Technology Institute (ATI) at Jamalpur block under Palashbari upazila of the district where additional director (AD) of DAE, Rangpur region M. Shah Alam attended as the chief guest.
Speaking at the function, AD Shah Alam said if farmers suspiciously use insecticides in their land without detecting the presence of harmful insecticides, they might incur losses economically side by side with polluting the environment.
In this context, he urged the farmers to use insecticides at the crop field after ensuring the presence of the harmful insects there.
During the technology demonstration, the agri experts and the local farmers found some insects like green leap hoppers, white leaf hoppers, short horn grasshoppers, and black beetle including neutral insects.
Then, AD M. Shah Alam and other experts said as the presence of the insects was not in severity level, there is no necessity of using insecticides in the paddy field.
Deputy Director of DAE AKM Ruhul Amin, additional AD (Crop production) Shawkat Osman, principal of the institute ATM Mizanur Rahman, upazila agriculture officer M. Azizul Islam, sub assistant agriculture officer Sharmila Sarmin, and farmers including journalists were present on the occasion.
