The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) governing council mulls of reducing the salary gap between the top local players and foreign players in the fourth edition of the tournament.
Although there was salary structure in the last year, there were questions lingering over the icon players payment as many expressed disappointment with the huge gap between the icon cricketers (Tk35 lakh) and foreign cricketers (US$70,000).
This time the idea of icon players could be shelved as the governing council wants the top players to be bracketed as A plus category player. Nothing is finalized yet in this regard but one thing is sure that the salary gap will be reduced as the BPL authority promised it earlier.
“Nothing is finalised as of now but the salary gap between the local top players and foreign players would be revised. There are many things to decided what we would finalise before the players draft,” said BPL member secretary IH Mallick.
The players’ draft of the BPL will be held on September 30 while the tournament begins on November 4. The final of theBPL-4 will be held December 7 or 8.
“Bangladesh will have a practice camp in Sydney before the New Zealand series. The team will leave Bangladesh on December 9 and that’s why we have to finish the tournament before that.”
There might be a provision that the old franchisees can retain two players from the category sans A plus. New franchisees could get the opportunity to have a first call during the players draft.
Sylhet Division was dropped while Rajshahi and Khulna returned to the fray as the fourth edition of Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is all set to enthrall the cricket crazy nation.
Mango Entertainer, a sister concern of Renaissance Group acquired Rajshahi and Gemcon Group got the rights of Khulna Division. Sylhet which was the part of BPL-3 as the name of Sylhet Superstars was released due to disciplinary issue, said BPL authority.
“Sylhet has some disciplinary issue and moreover they themselves didn’t want to continue. They have been show-caused in the last BPL in a certain incident and moreover they created a problematic situation in paying the players. That’s why we decided to drop them from this edition,” Mallick revealed. But he disclosed that they have realized the money from all the team of the BPL and there is no problem with that.
“We took the bank guarantee from Sylhet before the start of the BPL-3 and when we saw they weren’t clearing the payment, we en-cashed that bank guarantee. What we tried to make sure that no team could make any scene with payment and we are successful with that.”
With the joining of the two teams and the discard of one team, BPL team now stands on seven what was six in the past year. Rajshahi and Khulna are added to Dhaka Dynamites, Comilla Victorians, Rangpur Riders, Barisal Bulls and Chittagong Vikings. These seven teams face each other in a double-leg tournament in two venues-Dhaka and Chittagong.
Mallick said they have considered the security issue which is why they didn’t increase the number of venues.
“We considered security issue since we have to ensure the security of all teams and players. So if the venue is increased, it would be tough. That’s why we kept venues limited to two cities.”
