Shakib Al Hasan stands on a good chance to inscribe his name as the highest wicket-taker of Bangladesh in all three formats of cricket as the one-day international series against Afghanistan rolls on to the ground from September 25.
The ace all-rounder currently is the highest wicket-taker for Bangladesh in Test (147 wickets) and T20 International (65 wickets) and need just two wickets to overtake Abdur Razzak as the highest wicket-getter in ODI format. While Razzak who hasn’t been the plan of Bangladesh national team for quite some time, tops the list with 207 wickets, Shakib has 206 under his belt. With 203 wickets, Bangladesh ODI skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza also is close to break the record and could make it ahead of Shakib if luck permits. But as far as the longevity is concerned, Shakib keeps him safe by far distance to take the record solely for him.
His predecessor Abdur Razzak however believed Shakib could set such a great benchmark in taking wickets in all formats what would be so tough for others to emulate. He also tipped Shakib to be the first Bangladeshi bowler to take 300 to 400 wickets in ODI format if he plays continuously.
“I won’t say or I can’t say how many wickets he would take before retiring from the cricket but he stands on a good chance to break several records. His dedication and hunger makes him absolute favourite to make so many records for Bangladesh,” Razzak said, wishing his would be successor a good luck.
“I believe he is going to set such a benchmark which would be tough to emulate. The rate at which he is progressing, is unbelievable. He is quite a genius and Bangladesh is lucky to have a player like him,” said Razzak, the first Bangladeshi bowler to take 200 wickets in ODI format.
Razzak however refused to predict how many wickets the prodigious all-rounder might take before ending his career but said nothing is impossible for Shakib.
“If you say he can take 500 wickets, I will agree because I know talent like him can do some amazing thing. But I won’t predict because there is many things involved here. However if Bangladesh plays cricket continuously and if Shakib can continue cricket as injury-free, he is able to break any record. As I said earlier, he would set a high standard for Bangladeshi player.”
While Razzak played for Bangladesh as leading spinner, Shakib was there to assist him as partner in the early of his career and grew up as the finest spinner cum all-rounder in the world.
“He is picked up as the all-rounder of the team. His inclusion gave the team a right balance as the captain has the luxury to play an extra bowler or batsman because of him. It’s pleasant to see his rise as the world’s best all-rounder. He is class apart,” Razzak heaped praise on his junior mate.
Razzak picked up Shakib’s best performance of three wickets and 45 runs against New Zealand in 2008 and said that’s the performance which began Shakib’s era in Bangladesh cricket.
“I can’t remember the exact year but I can recall the day when he took three wickets and made 40 or 45 runs against New Zealand. Ashraful was then captain of the team. After that performance all of us in the team were sure that this guy has something extraordinary and he can be world beater. He lived up to the expectation truly.”
