A couple was killed in their sleep and 15 others were injured as a Dhaka-bound coach rammed into their home in Baharampur rail crossing area of the city on early Wednesday.

The victims were identified as Bashir Uddin, 40, a rickshaw-van puller and his wife Resma Begum, 36, a home aide of the area.
Ifte Khair Alam, senior assistant commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, said the accident took place at around 1.45am when a Dhaka bound passenger bus of Keya Paribahan from Chapainawabganj lost control over the vehicle and entered the roadside houses on Railway lands at Baharampur Rail Crossing area.
“The driver was sleepy and he was driving the bus so speedily and recklessly that is why it crossed a high footpath and broke a signal light post before rammed into the houses and leaving the couple died on the spot”, Alam added.
However; Bashir’s three children Hirdoy, Alif and Rahat narrowly escaped the accident and they were left unhurt although they were sleeping together in two nearby beds.
Meanwhile, police in association with fire service men recovered their bodies from beneath the bus and sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) for autopsy. They also rescued the injured. On the other hand, some 15 others including four of neighbouring houses and six passengers were injured in the accident. Five persons were admitted to RMCH and two persons took first aid at the hospital.
Among the injured, the condition of Railway gateman Dipu, 40, his wife Reshma, 35, of the gateman’s house was stated to be critical. Manik, 16, and Zakir, 19, who were sleeping at a club room were also injured.
