College teacher shortage

The teachers must realise sincere execution of their duties is more important than trying to get city postings

Shortage of teachers at government colleges has become a major concern. According to recent reports, around 20 per cent of college posts ranging from those of principals to lecturers are now lying vacant for a long time. In terms of specified numbers, some 3022 posts comprising of professors, associate and assistant professors and lecturers are unfilled. Major causes to this existing predicament are reported to have arisen due to absence of timely promotions, creation of new posts, provision lacking direct recruitment through the special Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) and also pending rulings.
If these, however, are actual reasons, concerned authorities of the government must immediately address them. In order to deal with the crisis the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (DSE) has directed teachers of one specialisation to teach other subjects besides taking classes in multiple colleges. Additionally, some college authorities are reported to have coping with the shortfall of teachers by hiring guest faculties and employing MA students. Alarmingly, many of these former students and guest teachers have been found to be lacking in proper training, thus compromising the quality of education. All of the mentioned strategies may apply as stopgap measures, but they are by no means, long term solutions. In fact, these temporary solutions have become a long standing ill-trend in the upper tertiary of our education system.
Nevertheless, some college authorities have suggested that the government should immediately begin direct recruitment of teachers to end the crisis while maintaining the quality of education. This recruitment procedure could be seriously considered by employing suitable teachers according to their merits, academic qualifications and teaching capabilities.
Rather bafflingly, the crisis also marks a contradiction to its cause. When small town colleges are reeling from teachers’ crisis, the scenario in metropolitan Dhaka is completely different. For instance , according to sources,  there are 224 teachers against 200 posts in Dhaka College, 198 teachers against 174 posts in Titumir College, 145 teaches against 117 posts in Govt Bangla College, 41 teachers against 23 posts in Govt Biggyan College.  We fail to grasp, why and how have these colleges managed to recruit more teachers to their required number of posts? It clearly smacks of preferential treatment and also administrative mismanagement. More to it, the teachers must realise – sincere execution of their duties is more important to avail metropolitan-city posting facilities. Being crucial tools for building future generations, they must be committed to render professional services wherever in the country required.
Finally, the sufferers of this crisis are our students, so we expect the government to act accordingly, so to tackle the crisis reasonably, thus put an end to it.
