HC seeks explanation from Sakhipur UNO, OC

The High Court yesterday summoned the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Sakhipur upazila and the officer-in-charge of Sakhipur Police Station to appear before it on September 27 to explain their stance on handing a two-year-jail term to a schoolboy over alleged threats to a lawmaker via Facebook.
After granting a permanent bail to the boy, Sabbir Shikdar, a vacation bench of HC judges Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Ashish Ranjan Das passed the order in a suo moto move (of its own move) following a report published in a national daily yesterday.
The HC also asked Sabbir Shikdar to be present before it on September 27.
The bench came up with the order after Supreme Court lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan placed the report before the HC bench for passing necessary orders.
Earlier, Supreme Court lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan drew attention of the HC bench submitting the report published at a national daily headlined Boy jailed for FB comment about MP.
On September 17, a mobile court, led by Executive Magistrate Mohammad Rafiqul Islam of Sakhipur upazila in Tangail sentenced Sabbir Shikder to two years imprisonment on charge of uploading a message of threat to Anupam Shajahan Joy, MP of Tangail-8 (Basail-Sakhipur) constituency, on the social networking site Facebook messenger.
On Saturday, a mobile court led by Sakhipur UNO Mohammad Rafiqul Islam sentenced the schoolboy under the ICT act on charges of threatening a ruling Awami League lawmaker via Facebook messenger, according to the report.
UNO Rafiqul passed the order a day after police detained the boy following a general diary filed by Anupam Shajahan Joy, lawmaker of Tangail-8 (Basail-Sakhipur) constituency.
