Agro-based industries get priority in new industrial policy: Amu

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu yesterday said the government is giving priority to setting up agro-based industries in the country to ensure people's food security, reports BSS.
"Agro/food processing and agriculture machinery manufacturing industries have been placed in the priority list in National Industrial Policy-2016," he said speaking at the concluding ceremony of Bangladesh Inspired Project at Daffodil University auditorium in the city.
Bangladesh Agro Processors Association (BAPA) and European Union are jointly implemented the project for the development of food processing and agriculture based small and medium industries in Bangladesh.
Presided over by BAPA President AFM Fakhrul Islam Munshi, the function was also addressed by Inspired Project Adviser Prof. M. Moslem Ali, Project Director and Additional Secretary Sushen Chandra Das, Daffodil University Prof. Dr. Yusuf M. Islam and Bangladesh Inspired Programme Team leader Ali Sabet, among others, said an official release.
Amir Hossain Amu suggested setting up area based small industries considering availability of raw materials to utilize the potentials of agro-based industries.
The young learners of universities should also be inspired to create new entrepreneurs in the country, he said.
The minister said interested entrepreneurs would be allocated plots at district level BSCIC industrial estates to set up area based agro-processing industries.
Speaking at the function, agro-processing entrepreneurs said it is possible to earn Taka 10,000 crore from food processing sector in next five years.
Currently, the country is exporting Taka 1,600-crore products annually from this sector, they added.
They demanded law interest loans and urgent gas connections to agro based small industries to increase exports from the sector.
