‘The proposal will be sent to ECNEC for approval’

The 'Ekti Bari, Ekti Khamar (One House, One Farm - EBEK)' project of the government likely to be extended for five more years with a view to bring solvency among two crore additional people of the country. 

The initiative has been taken to expand the project after successful implementation of its first phase ended on June 30. 
The decision was taken in a meeting of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) held on September 7 with Prime Minister’s Principle Secretary Abul Kalam Azad in the chair.
According to the decision, the extended EBEK project will continue its activities along with the Palli Sanchay Bank (PSB), which was established recently to save funds of the EBEK project beneficiaries.
The resolution of the meeting, which was signed by the Principle Secretary Secretary Abul Kalam Azad on September 15, is available to this correspondent. The resolution contained seven decisions and the RDCD Secretary and Chairman of Palli Sanchay Bank were instructed to take necessary measures to implement the decisions immediately.
Rural Development and Cooperatives Secretary Dr Proshanto Kumar Roy, who attended the meeting, told this correspondent that the PMO had decided to extend the ended project for five years more as two crore poor and ultra poor people would be benefited from the project.
“Around one crore poor and ultra poor people of the country have already benefited from the project. They have already deposited around Tk 3,080 crore through around 40,200 societies formed under the project. 
The next target of the project is to involve more two crore people in the project and increase the fund to Tk 12,000 crore,” he added.
According o the decision, the Rural Development and Cooperatives Division (RDCD) will prepare a draft of proposal. The proposal will be sent to the Planning Commission for the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) for approval. The Prime Minister heads the ECNEC. If the ECNEC approves it, the project will be extended further, he added.
Prime Minister’s Principle Secretary Abul Kalam Azad could not be reached for making comment in this connection as he is now in New York with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to join the United Nations General Assembly.
According to papers, the EBEK project will continue its activities along with the new bank and expand its area of coverage. 
The RDCD Secretary and Chairman of Palli Sanchay Bank (PSB) have been instructed to prepare of plan of action to run the two government body together.
The PSB authority has also been asked to take the responsibility of the societies formed under the project and accommodate the manpower of the EBEK to the new bank as per the PSB act.
It also asked the authorities concerned to take necessary steps to amend the PSB Act as the project is expected to extend further.
