Nahid orders action against Nitu killer

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid yesterday directed the local administration to take legal action to ensure punishment of the killer of Madaripur schoolgirl Nitu, reports UNB. Nitu Mandal was hacked to death by a stalker at Aisar Kandi village in Kalkini upazila in Madaripur on Sunday. Alleged stalker Milon Mandal waylaid Nitu on her way to school and hit her with a sharp weapon in her abdomen, leaving her critically injured. Later, she died on way to hospital. Local people caught Milon and handed him over to police. The culprit was then taken into custody for questioning after he was produced before the court yesterday. Milon Mondol confessed before the magistrate to have killed the girl for spurning him, police sources said.
On Monday morning, Nahid talked to Deputy Commissioner and Police Superintendent of Madaripur over phone and asked them to take necessary steps to ensure punishment of the killer. He expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members of Nitu, a handout said.
Our Madaripur correspondent adds: Teachers and students of Nabogram High School in Kalkini upazila of Madaripur yesterday formed a human chain yesterday in protest against the murder of Class IX student Nitu. The gruesome killing caused outrage among villagers. They demanded exemplary punishment for the killer of the 14-year-old girl. The girl was said to be a good science student and also culturally active.
There was a pall of gloom at the school when her body was taken there after the post-mortem examination at the Madaripur Sadar Hospital yesterday afternoon. Many of the teachers and students were unable to hold back tears. Her body was later taken to her family home, where her family and neighbours wept inconsolably. The child was buried in the courtyard of her home following the performance of religious rites. On Sunday night, Nirmal Mondol, father of the girl, had filed a case in this regard with Dasar police station against Milon Mondol.  Dasar police also recovered the murder weapon.
