The government's target to increase power generation capacity to 24,000 MW by 2021 is to go close to double in near future as another 71 power plants have been undertaken to feed the nation with constant supply of electricity, reports BSS.
"There are 106 power plants in the country and, InshAllah, the whole nation will have easy access to power by 2021," Director General of Power Cell under Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry Engineer Mohammad Hossain told BSS here today.
He said the present government by now installed 79 power plants since 2009 to raise the total number to 106. "At this moment, the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has undertaken another 71 such projects to increase power generation capacity to more 22,897 MW in near future, almost double to what we would have by 2021," he said.
The current power generation capacity is 14,980 MW, covering 78 percent of the population. There has been an overwhelming development in the power sector during the last seven years due to farsighted leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, seldom keeping the nation under load shedding that was a daily phenomenon before 2009.
Eng Muhammad Hossain said 30 power plants having electricity generation capacity of 10,743 MW are under construction, while 32 others with 5,259 MW capacity are under tender procedure. Nine more projects with 6,895 MW capacity are under pipeline.
