Road accidents rampant

Road accidents
rampant

It is extremely worrying to note that road traffic accidents are showing no sign of abetting in the country.  Well over a hundred persons have been killed in road crashes all over the country since the start of the Eid holidays. The figure of deaths is changing everyday. Most of the accidents have occurred after the Eid on the return journeys. It is obvious that reckless driving caused the accidents that claimed so many lives. The   volume of traffic on the highways was relatively less after the Eid and the drivers resorted to rash driving caring little about the safety of the passengers’ lives.
Drunk driving by a man resulted in the tragic deaths of an elderly couple in the city's Sheorapara area just after the Eid day. Police could not yet nab the killer. As a matter of fact, road accident has become a formidable national problem recently. Hardly a day passes without a road accident in the country. At least 21,000 lives are lost and thousands of people are injured on the roads every year, according to the latest report of the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Plying of unfit buses, overloading of buses, unskilled drivers in the steering wheels, reckless driving, violation of traffic rules and pitiable conditions of roads and highways are some of the reasons behind the road accidents in the country. It is unfortunate to note that the relevant authorities conduct fitness test of vehicles annually but do not care to examine the fitness of drivers on a regular basis. Taking advantage of it scores of jobless youths undergo   nominal training in driving from different organizations for a short duration and start driving vehicles. It is not difficult to get licenses as ‘speed money’ helps the novice drivers.
The authorities concerned should find out the causes of road accidents and act accordingly. What is needed now is strict enforcement of traffic laws, improvement of the conditions of highways and putting an end to the irregularities in issuance of driving licences and fitness certificates. Concerted efforts of all can help minimize road accidents.
The drivers of buses and other vehicles should undergo adequate training for gaining skills to avert accidents. The errant drivers should be brought under discipline. There is no alternative to improving road safety in the greater national interest.
