Special Correspondent

The cabinet committee yesterday approved a proposal of the energy ministry to drill five wells in three gas fields-Srikail, Bakhrabad and Rashidpur to meet the increasing gas demand of the country.
The approval was given at a meeting of the committee held at the secretariat with Finance minister in the chair.
According to the proposal, Gazprom International Investment BV, Russian gas exploration company, will drill to explore gas from five wells-Srikile-4, Bakhrabad-10 and Rashidpur-9, 10 and 12 at a cost of USD 98,193,264.
The Russian company will be able to produce 176 million cubic feet per day (MMcfd) gas from the five wells which is 16 per cent of total production of Petrobangla, the proposal said.
Gazprom will drill the gas wells under the speedy supply of Power and Energy (Special Provision) Act 2010 to produce gas within a shortest possible time, according to the proposal.
The Bangladesh Gas Fields Company Limited (BGFCL), the Sylhet Gas Fields Company Limited (SGFCL), the Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX) signed an agreement with Gazprom on April 26, 2012, to drill 10 wells in five gas fields.
Under the agreement, the Russian company has drilled four wells at Titas gas field, one at Rashidpur field and two each at Shahabajpur and Semutang fields and one at the Begumganj field of BAPEX.
Currently, the country’s rate of gas production is 2,332 MMcfd. At least 25 gas fields have so far been discovered in the country, while 19 gas fields are currently in production. By 2015–16, the country's overall demand for gas is estimated to be 3,800 million cubic feet per day.
At present, 2,330 mmscfd gas is being consumed by power (41 per cent), fertilisers (7 per cent), industry and tea estates (17 per cent), captive power (17 per cent), CNG (5 per cent), commercial activities (1 per cent) and domestic activities (12 per cent).
Around 2.5 million customers of different sectors and 72 gas-based power plants use natural gas in the country at present.
