Nilphamari: Some 25 low-lying villages in Dimla and Jaldhaka upazilas were inundated as the water of the Teesta River was flowing 20cm above the danger level as of yesterday afternoon following the onrush of water from the upstream, leaving thousands of people marooned, reports UNB.
Sources at Dalia Flood Rehabilitation Centre said the water at the Teesta started gushing from Doumahani, India since Tuesday.
The water level in the river rose 20cm above its red mark at Dalia point at 5pm on Wednesday and it continued to swell.
Meanwhile, red alert has been issued at Doumahani of India as the Teesta water was flowing 52cm above the danger level there at 12 noon yesterday. Following the red alert in India, Nilphamari district administration has asked the people of low-lying chars along the river to take shelter at safer places.
Dimla UNO Rezaul Karim said they have started evacuating the people living on the chars along and on the banks of the Teesta.
