EC to start updating voter list soon after Eid

The Election Commission will start data collection of possible voters soon after Eid-ul Fitr for updating the countrys voter list, reports UNB.
The commission is going to announce schedules of data collection at a press briefing today, said EC Director (Public Relations) SM Asaduzzaman yesterday.
This year, data of all citizens aged from 15-17 years will also be collected to provide them national identity (NID) cards as per the recent decision of the Election Commission, EC officials said.
Enumerators will complete collect data in three phases by November this year.
The EC will make the draft updated voter list public on January 2 next to receive complaints regarding the update, if any.
After disposing of complaints, the commission will publish final updated voter list on January 31 next.
In order to complete the voter update task smoothly, the commission has already formed an 18-member central coordination committee headed by EC secretary Sirazul Islam.
Besides, it formed voter list update coordination committees in every division, district and upazila through a notification issued on June 30.
Bangladeshi citizens who were born on or before January 1, 1998 will be eligible to be registered as voters, while the Bangladeshi nationals who were born on or before January 1, 2000 will be eligible for the NID cards for the first time.
The young Bangladeshi nationals, whose data to be collected for providing NID cards, will be registered as voters soon after their age exceeds 18, EC officials said.According to the commissions statistics, there are now 96.22 million voters in the country.
