Rivers in greater Sylhet rise

Rain marred Eid-ul-Azha celebrations in the capital and elsewhere in the country on Tuesday, interrupting prayers in the open and sacrificing of animals.
The Dhaka Met Office at Agargaon recorded 12mm of rainfall on the Eid day. With 24mm of rainfall overnight, the total was 36mm in 36 hours. Streets in areas like Shantinagar and Najirabazar went under water. At some places, clogged drains turned the streets red with the blood of the animals sacrificed.
The rain, however, made the job of two Dhaka city corporations easier by washing away the blood that otherwise would have taken some time to be cleaned.
But the rain in the country and across the border in north-eastern India pushed up the level of rivers in the greater Sylhet region.
The Monu at the Railway Bridge and Maulvi Bazar points was flowing 25cm and 76cm above the danger level, respectively.
The rain-fed Kushiyara was flowing 24cm above its danger level at Sheola in Sylhet and 10cm over its danger level at Sherpur-Sylhet, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said yesterday (Thursday).
The Kushiyara, along with its twin Surma, which carries the flow of the Barak river from the Manipur state of India, would continue to rise in the next 24 hours.
