Minister promises fall in salt prices

Commerce minister Tofail Ahmed yesterday said that the price of salt in Bangladesh will return to normal within a short period of time. “A total of 1.5 lakh tonnes of salt have already been imported and an additional one lakh tonne will be imported,” the minister told reporters at the Secretariat on the first day after the Eid-ul-Azah vacation. The price of salt, which was Tk. 30 per kg a couple of weeks ago, has gone up to Tk. 42 per kg recently. Tofail Ahmed expressed hope that Bangladesh will soon be totally free of militant and terrorists. No untoward incident or terrorist attack has occurred in the country this Eid, he pointed out. He also expressed shock about the boiler explosion at a factory in Tongi, assuring that the culprits will be brought to justice.
