Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) is an epoch-making step of the government towards reducing backlog of cases, said Chittagong District Judge Md Nurul Huda, also president of District Legal Aid.
He said this while addressing a workshop of the judges of the ADR. The title of the workshop was ‘Domestic Violence Act, 2010 (Prevention and Protection) and Ordinance 2013: Challenges, Recommendations and Providing Legal Aid Ordinance 2015’.
Mujahidur Rahman delivered a welcome address at the workshop held at the conference room of the district court.
A data on how to prevent domestic violence and women repression was also shown at the workshop.
The Legal Aid of Patiya upazila in Chittagong received 2131 complaints from November 2014 to April 2015.
Out of the total 2131 complaints, the number of domestic violence related complaints stood at 1298. A total of 968 cases were settled through arbitration and 29 cases were settled through negotiation under Domestic Violence Act, 2010 (Prevention and Protection).
Aftabur Rahman Jafri, chief executive officer of Ghashful, an NGO, delivered the vote of thanks at the workshop.
Jafri in his speech said that Ghashful has been working in 11 unions of Patiya upazila in Chittagong under this project. The living standard has been uplifted in the family and the society of Bangladesh.
“We have to come forward with the negotiation mentality through the ADR. The conventional attitude is being changed towards checking domestic violence and women repression. Apart from the government, the role of the development agencies and the NGOs is also very important in this regard. We can be optimistic of achieving success in this respect if the relevant acts are implemented,” said a speaker.
