In order to ensure hassle-free journey for the homebound passengers ahead of Eid, the district police yesterday vowed to show zero tolerance towards extortion and passengers’ woes.
Chittagong Superintendent of Police came up with the assurance after holding a view-exchange meeting with the transport service providers, members of the Highway Police and officials of Roads and Highways Department (RHD).
The officials of the RHD, Chittagong also announced to repair the damaged highways caused by the recent heavy downpour.
“Extortion usually takes place at the bus terminals and on the highways. The homebound passengers are made to suffer ahead of Eid. I want to make it crystal clear that no leniency will be shown to extortion and passengers’ sufferings. We will show zero tolerance in this regard,” affirmed Chittagong SP AKM Hafiz Akhter.
“We have opened a control room. Any person facing any suffering may give a call to the control room. Whoever may be the person, we will take action in this regard.” vowed the SP.
At the meeting the transport service providers including owners, workers and the police reached a consensus with regard to suspend the movement of heavy vehicles like trucks and covered vans three days.
“As per the decision of the meeting, the homebound passengers face sufferings due to the long tailback which is created on the highways during Eid.
To mitigate the sufferings of the homebound passengers, all types of heavy vehicles except for emergency goods will not play the highways on the day, before and after the day of Eid,” added the SP.
The transport service providers accused the police of harassment in the name of checking transport documents on the highways.
Replying to the allegation from the transport providers, the SP instantly declared to stop checking transport documents upto Eid.
The district police also decided to deploy 500 additional members of the police on the highways and the bus terminals to ease traffic congestion and ensure security for the homebound passengers.
“Many potholes and puddles have been developed on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway. As a result, the usual pace of the movement is being hampered and accidents occur.
We are going to witness huge traffic congestion if the highways are not repaired on an urgent basis,” warned Abu Mozaffar, secretary of Bangladesh Covered Van Truck Goods Transport Association.
“The repair work has already started on highways under four-lane project. The repair work will be completed within seven days,” said Zia Uddin, Chittagong Divisional Engineer of Roads and Highways Department.
