Teachers, students and staff of Dhaka University (DU), popularly known as the Oxford of the East, yesterday celebrated the Dhaka University Day amid great enthusiasm and traditional festivity on the campus, marking its 94th founding anniversary.
The theme of the day was ‘Higher Education and Sustainable Development”.
Prime Minister’s International Affairs Adviser Dr Gowher Rizvi inaugurated the day’s programme by hoisting the national flag, university flag and releasing pigeons, balloons on the campus in the morning.
Pro-vice-chancellors Professor Nasreen Ahmed (Academic) and Prof Shahid Akther Hossain (Administration), Treasurer Prof Dr Kamal Uddin and Registrar Syed Rezaul Karim were also present at the function, with DU VC Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique in the chair.
Education Secretary Md Nazrul Islam Khan delivered a lecture on ‘Higher Education and Sustainable Development’ at a discussion at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) auditorium on the campus. Emeritus professors, former vice-chancellors, pro-vice-chancellors, provosts of halls, deans, teachers and representatives of staff and employees attended the session. Earlier, students from different residential halls carrying banners, festoons and balloons brought out processions and assembled at “Mall Chattar” around 10am.
Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique led a colourful procession that paraded from “Mall Chattar” (near administrative building) to TSC.
The DU authorities chalked out various programmes, including exhibition and children’s drawing competition one the DU Fine Arts Faculty premises, discussion at TSC auditorium, reminiscence and cultural session, sports and debate competitions, to mark the day.
DU Journalists Association (DUJA) also brought out a procession from TSC marking the day which paraded important streets of the campus.
While speaking at the inaugural session at ‘Mall Chattar’, PM’s Advisor on International Affairs Dr Gowher Rizvi urged the DU students to prepare themselves with world standard knowledge so that they can secure vital place in the global society.
“No doubt, DU is the highest seat of learning in the country but the students of this university should have firm determination to prove themselves before the world competing with the internationals arena,” he added.
Recalling the historical past of the university, he said that Dhaka University has an unique characteristic among different universities across the globe as the students, teachers and staff members of this university had an outstanding contribution to every field including education, culture, sports and democratic movement.
While presenting a keynote paper at the discussion at TSC, Education Secretary Nazrul Islam Khan said that education is the primary agent of transformation towards sustainable development and that is why citizens in the country must be enlightened with the light of higher education. “Higher education does not award only a certificate but also social values,” he added.
Citing increasing collaborative moves for healthy education, he said that Dhaka University should enrich its communication with other universities across the world so that the students of this university can get opportunities to address their various problems.
