The victim was identified as Chameli Begum, 22, wife of Badal Mia of the area and daughter of Munsur Ali of Selimpur village in Sadar upazila of the district.

But the father of the victim claimed that Chameli was killed by her husband for dowry. The relatives of Chameli, said the marriage of Chameli was solemnized a year before with Badal Mia, of Pakdi village in the same upazila. After the marriage, Badal Mia often tortured Chameli for bringing dowry from her father but she always refused it, but she had to bear torture by her in-laws and husband.
Four months before, Munsur Ali, father of Chameli gave Tk 9,000 as dowry to Badal Mia for peace of his daughter.
