A 15-member Bangladesh national volleyball team scheduled to leave Dhaka for Kyrgyzstan today (Sunday) to participate in the World Cup Pre-qualifying competition. Drawn in the Group F, Bangladesh will begin their campaign from September 13 and will know about their opponents after their arrival in Kyrgyzstan capital Bishkek.
Besides the host Kyrgyzstan, Bangladesh will have to face Turkmenistan, Maldives and Nepal. Bangladesh, who clinched the runners up position in the previous competition and qualified for the qualifying phase, want to be champions in this round to move into the next phase.
Ahead of their pre-qualifying competition, Bangladesh team had only 15 days for taking full fledged preparation while the coach had full team from 23rd August, though the camp was started with eight players from August 8.
Coach Golam Rausl Khan said that he had not enough time to prepare the team as all the players could practice together only for 15 days.
“It would be better if we could begin the camp for few days earlier, at least two or three months before, then I would be satisfied with our preparation. We started the camp with eight players from August 8, rest of the players (services team) were busy with their inter service tournament.”
But Golam Rasul was a bit confident about to do good result while he said that his target to be group champions.
“Though I had very short time to prepare the team but all the players are fit as they were in match engagements, as they played a big tournament organised by the Bangladesh Army. I know that is a very competitive tournament of the inter services,” Rasul said.
“Out of 12 players in the team, I have five players from Bangladesh Army, two from Border Guard Bangladesh, one from Bangladesh Air Force,” Rasul informed. About the target Rasul said, “I don’t think any option but to be champions in the group, though top two will qualify from this zone.” “If we would have any preparation match it would be better for us.”
Fazle Rabbi, joint secretary of the Bangladesh Volleyball Federation (BVF) said, “Targeting to be group champions we have been taking preparations, we began the camp with 30 players and picked up 12 players in the final squad step by step.” “In the previous time, held in Pakistan we were runners up and moved into the Asian qualifying phase but we had to face top teams of Asia, even also world class opponents like Iran, Japan and Thailand.”
