At least 15 students of Government MM College were injured as criminals allegedly backed by the ruling party swooped on them at their rental house at Kharki area in Jessore town on Tuesday night.
Six critically injured students were admitted to Jessore Medical College Hospital. They are: Fazlur Rahman, 22, Shah Newaz, 21, Hazrat Ali, 23, Sumon, 23, Shamimur Rahman, 22 and Rubel, 23 – all are students of masters’ final year of the college. Of them, condition of Fazlur Rahman was stated critical, by Dr Moniruzzaman of the hospital.
Shikder Akkas Ali, officer in-charge, Kotwali police station said the criminals attacked the students suspecting them to be activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir. ‘The attackers have no political involvement’, he added. Sub-inspector Bidhan, investigation officer of the police station, said police arrested Almas Khan of Hamidpur village, Sabubur Rahman Sabu of Stadiumpara and Prakash Kumar Das of Arifpur in the town in an overnight drive in this connection.
Students and locals alleged that the criminals equipped with arms attacked the students after Tarabih prayers when they were returning to their house. The students, however, were tight lipped about the political identity of the attackers. But locals claimed that the miscreants were ruling party backed terrorists.
Two cases were lodged with the Kotwali police station in this regard, said the investigation officer.
