Recurrence of waterborne diseases ‘decrease’ in rural areas

RANGPUR: Recurrence of waterborne diseases marked substantial decrease in rural areas of Rangpur division following successful implementation of the various effective programmes taken by the government, reports BSS.The rural people have achieved laudable success in health, hygiene, sanitation, nutrition and safe drinking water during the past eight years because of massive awareness building activities being conducted under government assistance. According to Divisional Director (Health) Dr Mozammel Hossain, recurrence of waterborne diseases like diarrhoea, cholera, dysentery, hookworm, ringworm and others among the people of all ages has been reduced to the minimum.
“As a result of adequate public awareness on the related issues about waterborne diseases at the grassroots levels, the infant, child and maternal mortality rates have also been reduced to the minimum everywhere in Rangpur division,” he said. He said, “The government and non-government health officials and workers, Union Health Sub-Centres and Community Clinics have been playing key roles along with the efforts of different other government organisations, WHO and UNICEF.”
Chandanpat union Chairman Aminur Rahman said, “The common people are now aware about health, hygiene, sanitation, personal hygiene, safe drinking water and they do not use the open places as toilets as it was in the pasts.”
“Despite disappearance of diarrhoea, few incidents of waterborne diseases are still being noticed following consumption of rotten, old and unhygienic foodstuffs from a section of roadside hotels and restaurants,” social worker Shahidul Islam said.
According to Prof Dr Mofizul Islam Mantu of Northern Medical College, waterborne disease-related child and maternal mortalities would touch zero level in future following important roles being played by Community Clinics at the grassroots levels.
Community Medicine Specialist Dr Fazlul Haque at Rangpur Medical College said only few food poisoning related diarrhoea patients came to his chamber in recent years though their number was almost 20 to 30 times higher even a decade ago.
