India starts fuel transportation thru Bangladesh

DIPLOMATIC CORRESPONDENT

Indian state of Assam yesterday started transportation of fuel from to Tripura through Bangladeshi territory. “It began today (Saturday). In the first consignment, a convoy of 10 oil tankers with capacity 10 tonne fuel each entered Bangladesh through the Dawki-Tamabil border and scheduled to re-enter India via Chatlapur- Kailasahar border covering about 140 kilometres of Bangladeshi territory,” an engineer of the Roads and Highways Department told The Independent yesterday.  “There should be security arrangement while the convoy will be in Bangladesh,” he added. According to sources concerned, the Bangladesh side has been informed by the Indians that some 80 oil tankers with each having a capacity of 10 tonnes will transport fuel oil from Assam to Tripura, which has been suffering from fuel shortage for nearly two months due to the damage of the usual Indian highway caused by the recent floods.
The shipment of fuel oil through Bangladesh territory will end by the end of this month, according to the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the two countries in this regard on August 18.  Following the request from the Indian side, Bangladesh responded positively on humanitarian ground and short-term MoU was signed between the Roads and Highways Department and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), a public sector unit under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas of India. The MoU will facilitate transportation of petroleum goods (motor spirit, high speed diesel, superior kerosene oil & liquefied petroleum gas) from Assam to Tripura through Bangladesh territory. If required, the duration of the MoU can be extended for a short period of time.
