Ahead of the fifteenth anniversary of 9/11, the United States embassy in Dhaka has asked its citizens to continue to remain vigilant as terrorist threats ‘remains real and credible’. The embassy, however, said that there were no known specific threats to US citizens or interests in Bangladesh. “The US Embassy would like to remind the US citizens traveling to or residing in Bangladesh that the terrorist threat remains real and credible,” said a message posted on the embassy’s website dated September 8. “While there are no known specific threats to US citizens or interests in Bangladesh, the US citizens should continue to be vigilant and take extra caution as we approach the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks and the September 13-14 Bangladeshi holidays, which will result in increased travel in the country,” it said.
“Da’esh (also referred to as ISIL, or ISIS) and Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) have publicly claimed credit for various attacks in Bangladesh since September 2015 and further terrorist attacks could occur against foreigners,” it added.
