Transparency International, Bangladesh (TIB) yesterday observed that Relief And Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya and Food Minister Quamrul Islam should resign voluntarily for their alleged involvement in corruption. The anti-graft watchdog, TIB, thinks had the ministers resigned, it would set a precedent in the country. TIB Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman came up with the suggestion at a media briefing on the results of a survey styled ‘National Youth Integrity Survey-2015’ at its office in the capital.
Referring to the corruption allegation against Maya, the TIB executive director said as the corruption case against Maya is under trial, it can be safely assumed that had he resigned, it would have set an example in the country.
Recently, the Supreme Court quashed a High Court verdict that had acquitted Relief and Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya from graft charges and given him relief from a 13-year prison term.
About the food minister’s alleged involvement in a scandal over exporting sub-standard wheat, Iftekharuzzaman said so far it is proven that the quality of wheat was not good.
“Under this circumstance, he should have resigned voluntarily. If he is proven innocent through a trial, the people of the country would have welcomed him with floral wreaths,” he said.
