Trauma persists

Students get chance in unaffiliated instt

Students seeking admission to the Higher Secondary level are surprised to find their names on the merit list of a college which is not affiliated with the education board.
When guardians and students approached U U Laboratory College, Uttara, whose EIIN number is 135282 under the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, the college authorities said that they do not have any affiliation with the board.
Delwar, an official of the U U Laboratory College, said: “Last year, we applied for the affiliation, but haven’t got it yet. There cannot be any question of admission without affiliation.”
The board authorities, however, could not give any satisfactory answer and just said they would look into the matter.
Bayzid Ahmed, son of advocate Ahmed Ali, whose name was on the merit list of U U Laboratory College, does not know whether he will be able to get admission.
Talking to The Independent at the board office in Dhaka, Ahmed Ali said: “I met the chairman of education board who told me to go to the college section. When I went there, I was told to submit an application which I did. They said they will inform me later. I don’t know when the call will come.”

Like Bayzid, hundreds of admission-seekers are facing an uncertain future. Many parents are worried about their wards’ admission. Some 10-15 admission-seekers and their guardians were seen waiting outside the office of the education board chairman for hours to meet him.

Anik, Asif, Ashraful, Gaurab and Zahirul alleged that there were anomalies in the group selection. Students opting for commerce have got science, while science group students have got commerce and the commerce group has got technical. They said they did not know how the matter would be resolved.
Rubel Hossain, elder brother of Sweety Akhter, alleged: “My sister has got admission to the BAF Shaheen College, which she didn’t choose. Even though she chose Bangla medium, she was given English medium. To make matters worse, her roll number does not match with that on the college sheet. Only the ID number matches.”
“The college authorities have said her roll number has to match,” he added.
Biraj Kumar Saha, acting principal of Narayanganj College, said: “Our college has 1,850 seats allocated for boys, but not a single male student has been admitted here.”
Another admission-seeker, Sadmal Sakib, said his name was not there on the first merit list, despite having secured GPA-5 and special quota from the Army. He said the board authorities told him to wait for the second merit list which will be published on July 7 and their admission would continue from July 7-8, including late fees.
There were some other admission-seekers at the board premises who said they have got colleges for which they did not apply.
The board, however, said they have nothing  to do as the students have made mistakes while filling up forms through online and mobile SMS.
Al-Amin Mukti, guardian of Samdan Sakib, came to meet the board chairman with the application stating that his son has got admission in the Dhaka Bigyan College, though he had applied for the Government Science College.
He also said that he can’t bear the expenses  of the Dhaka Bigyan College which is taking Tk. 52,000 against the fixed fees set by the board.    The admission-seekers and their guardians alleged that the problem was created because of the online system.
However, Prof Abu Bakkar Siddique, chairman of the board said: “There is no problem with the online system. The computer cannot be blamed as the students filled up the forms from a stall or a shop and if they make mistakes, we cannot do anything. There is no scope for manipulating the results.”
Students whose names are on the first merit list would get the opportunity to get admission till July 2 without any late fees.
Asked about the higher fees, he said: “No institution can take fees more than that set by the board. Stern action will be taken after investigation. Operating colleges in air-conditioned environment is only an excuse. The board has not told them to use A-C in colleges. ”
