Some 86 per cent of youths in the country hold negative impression about integrity in politics, says a recent survey conducted by anti-graft watchdog Transparency International Bangladesh. Around 66 per cent respondents also say law enforcing agencies lack integrity, followed by land administration (65 per cent) and judicial services (57 per cent).
The survey, conducted among 3,656 people in 31 districts selected through a multi-stage stratified systematic sampling method, also reveals that youths in Bangladesh almost unanimously consider ‘lack of integrity’ as an enormous problem and detrimental to country’s economics and overall development. Dr. Ifterkharuzzaman, executive director of Transparency International Bangladesh, presented the results of ‘National Youth Integrity Survey-2015’, conducted between April 22 and May 7, at a press briefing at its office in Dhanmondi area of the capital yesterday.
The survey says 86 per cent of youths hold a positive impression about the level of integrity in private business sector, followed by private education (81 per cent), government education (80 per cent) and private health services (77 per cent). Some 92 per cent of respondents think that being honest is more important than being rich, while 68 per cent think honest people have more possibilities to succeed in life.
However, roughly one third of the surveyed youth admitted that they would like to engage in corrupt acts for Politicians, cops personal gains such as getting a good grade in a vital job, for collecting official documents, permits, license, for getting entrance to a good school or a renowned company or to get a dream job.
One in every five respondents said they had experience corruption in the last 12 months while accessing six different regular public services: to get licence or clearance, get rid of police harassment, access healthcare from govt facilities, get job, get admission in school/other educational institutions and to get more business.
Some 82pc respondents believe they can play vital role in integrity building and fighting corruption through advocacy and changing attitudes.
