OUR CORRESPONDENT, Dinajpur

Two alleged smugglers were killed and three others wounded in Borger Guard Bangladesh (BGB) firing following a clash during an anti-smuggling raid at Birampur railway station yesterday afternoon, police said.
The deceased were identified as Md Shahin, 28, son of Shukur Ali and Md Sultan 24, son of Md Abdur Rashid of Colonypara in Birampur upazila of Dinajpur. Local said both of them were cousins and they run a restaurant at Birampur station area.
The other bullet wounds were taken to Birampur Health Complex, Md Amiruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Birampur upazila said. Protesting the firing, the angry villagers blocked the Dinajpur-Dhaka highway.  Till filing the report they kept blocking on the highway [6.30pm].
Witnesses said at Hili station a gang of smugglers got into Saidpur-bound intercity train Rupsha Express. As the train arrived at Birampur rail station at around 5.00pm, a team of Phulbari-29 BGB raided the train for smuggling goods.
A BGB team seized Indian smuggled clothes from the railway station around 4pm, said commanding officer of BGB Battalion-29 Lt Col Kurban Ali.
Following the cloth seizure, the smugglers gathered in the area and swooped on the BGB men in the station area. The attackers also abducted a BGB member.
As situation was going beyond control, the BGB members fired bullets which left dead two on the spot and injured 3 others.
SM Moniruzzaman, UNO of Birampur, said necessary initiatives have been taken to control the situation.
