Reiterating government’s firm stance against militancy, State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam yesterday said the government will not bow down to militancy and compromise with militants, reports UNB. He said stern action will be taken against those who will promote and patronise militancy in the country. The State Minister was addressing an undergraduate orientation programme at the North South University (NSU) in the city.
Rab DG Benazir Ahmed and NSU Trustee Board Chairman Azim Uddin Ahmed, among others, spoke at the programme held with NSU VC Prof Atiqul Islam in the chair.
Shahriar said the NSU came under fire after the Holey Artisan Bakery attack on July one. “Militancy isn’t failure of a single person. It’s a collective failure.”
He advised the students to know about Bangladesh’s rich history and tradition keeping distance with militancy.
“Police should be informed immediately if anybody comes to know about any individual’s involvement in militancy,” he said adding that it will be equal crime if anybody fails to do that.
On US Secretary of State John Kerry’s recent visit, Shahriar said the United States once had called Bangladesh a ‘bottomless basket’ but this bag is now full of forex reserve worth US$ 32 billion.
He said all are aware of the appreciation came from Kerry on Bangladesh’s achievements who mentioned that Bangladesh has an extraordinary development story.
The Rab DG talked about the trend of misinterpretation of peaceful religion Islam in recent days to allure youths and involvement of ‘big brothers’ in disseminating religious lessons with distortion.
The speakers also laid emphasis on family bonding and
awareness among students to win the collective fights against militancy and contribute to the country’s prosperity.
