Five Bengali settler-groups have called a dawn-to-dusk hartal in the three districts comprising the Chittagong Hill Tracts for today, demanding the repeal of a law passed to resolve land disputes in the region, reports UNB. The CHT Land Dispute Resolution Commission (Amendment) Act, 2016 was gazetted on August 8. The five groups - Parbatya Ganaparishad, Parbatya Chattagram Somo-Odhikar Andolon, Parbatya Bangalee Chhatra Parishad and Parbatya Bangalee Chhatra Oikya Parishad - have called the hartal to thwart the first meeting of the CHT Land Dispute Resolution Commission after the amendment of the law, set for Sunday. It was announced from a press conference at Rangamati Diploma Engineers Institute auditorium on Saturday. Speaking at the press conference, leaders of the organisations alleged that a conspiracy has been hatched to evict the Bengalis living in the CHT using the amended law. Meanwhile, officials of the CHT Land Dispute Resolution Commission said the venue of its meeting can be shifted from CHT Development Board, Rangamati, if needed.
