Govt assists flood-hit farmers in recouping crop losses

RANGPUR: Agriculture experts at a seedling distribution ceremony here have said the government already started providing seed, seedling
and fertilisers to the flood-hit farmers in recouping crop losses incurred by them during recent floods, reports BSS.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) organised the ceremony at Gajoghontha union parishad premises under Gangachara upazila on Thursday to distribute Transplanted Aman (T-Aman) seedling among 120 flood-affected farmers.Deputy Director of the DAE S M Ashraf Ali attended the ceremony and distributed late variety ‘Naijarshail’ and BR 11 T-Aman seedling among the flood- affected farmers of different unions under Gangachara upazila as the chief guest.With Gangachara Upazila Agriculture Officer Abdullah Al Mamun in the chair, Gajoghontha union Chairman Dr Azizul Islam attended the ceremony as the special guest.
Gangachara Upazila Agriculture Officer Abdullah Al Mamun said land of the area was becoming more fertile after being inundated by floodwater of the Teesta every year bringing huge alluvial soil for decades together.
“To recoup crop losses caused by recent floods, the DAE has been distributing T-Aman seedling adequate for transplanting on 33 decimals of land among each of the 120 flood-affected small and marginal farmers in the upazila,” he said.The chief guest suggested the flood-affected farmers for cultivating early varieties of winter vegetables, mustard, ‘Mashkalai’ and potato to recoup crop losses without affecting timely cultivation of Boro, wheat, maize and other crops on the same land.“The present pro-farmer government has been working sincerely to make agricultural activities more profitable for the farmers through adapting to various natural calamities to attain sustainable agriculture utilising the latest technologies,” he added.
