The alleged ‘military trainer’ of the ‘new JMB’ (Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh) was killed and three policemen were injured during a raid conducted jointly by Roopnagar police and Counter Terrorism and Transitional Crime Unit (CTTC) of the DMP in Roopnagar area of the capital’s Mirpur yesterday evening. Getting informed that a militant was living in the top-floor flat of a six-storey building in the area, a police team launched the drive at around 8:30 pm, said Additional Inspector General (Admin) of the Police Headquarters Mukhlesur Rahman, after visiting the spot.
The deceased, identified as Murad alias Jahangir, was the second-in-command of Gulshan attack 'mastermind' Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury, said police. Murad had escaped from the Narayanganj militant hideout that was raided by the law enforcers on August 27, said officials.
Three police officers -- Rupnagar Police Station OC Syed Shahid Alam, Inspector Shaheen Fakir and Sub-Inspector Md Mominur Rahman were injured during the operation. The injured police officers were taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital at about 9:30pm. Shahid and Shaheen were later shifted to Square Hospital. The injured officers were out of danger, said doctors.
Inspector Shahid Alam got stabbed on the back while Inspector Shaheen Fakir was shot on his left arm, said Dhaka Medical College Hospital sources. Sub-Inspector Mominur Rahman sustained stab wounds on his hand.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and senior police officers visited the injured police officers in the hospital. Talking to reporters at the hospital, the home minister said the doctors informed him that the injured police officers were undergoing operation and they are out of danger.
Police's CTTC unit chief Monirul Islam said Murad was the 'military trainer' of the new JMB. "He had rented the house in Narayanganj where JMB chief Tamim was killed along with two of his associates in a police raid. He was known as Major Murad in the organization,” he added.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Sanwar Hossain who heads the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s bomb disposal unit, said a day after the raid in Narayanganj, police also raided the house in Roopnagar but failed to nab Murad. Police found the house on the ground floor locked from outside and told the house owner to inform police whenever the militant returns to his house to take his belongings.
“When the militant returned home yesterday, the house owner informed the local police and locked the room from outside. Getting information, a team of Roopnagar police raided the house,” he said.
“When the police team entered house, the militant attacked them with his pistol and knife. He also tried to explode a grenade which did not detonate,” the police official added.
Members of CTTC, Bomb Disposal Team, RAB and SWAT members rushed to the spot after getting informed and the operation finally ended at about 11:00pm, said police.
According to the neighbours, they did not see anyone visiting Murad.
They said that Murad was living in the house with his wife. His wife might also be involved with militancy, said police.
Earlier on August 27, three militants, including Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury, a mastermind of the Gulshan café attack, were killed during a police raid on a house in Narayanganj sadar upazila.
A joint team of the CTTC, police headquarters and Narayanganj district police together carried out the raid codenamed “Operation Hit Strong 27”.
