The country witnessed a 31 percent decrease in road accidents and casualties in eight months of the current year compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, according to a survey carried out by the National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways (NCPSSR), non-government rights body, UNB reports.
It says at least 2,376 people were killed and 6,341 injured in 2,179 road accidents from January 1 to August 31 this year across the country, while the figure was 4,622 , 9,151 and 3,162 respectively during the same period in the previous year.
The survey was conducted based on reports published on 20 national dailies, eight online news portals and news services and 10 regional newspapers, said NCPSSR general secretary Ashis Kumar Dey.
NCPSSR report shows that an average of 578 people died and 1,144 injured in 395 road accidents each month from January to August in 2015 while 297 people were killed and 793 injured in 273 accidents during the same period in the current year.
The road accidents were decreased by 31 percent while the deaths by 49 percent and the injuries by 31 percent, it said.
The national committee general secretary Ashis Kumar Dey mentioned five reasons for the positive change in the road accident scenario.
Publishing reports with constructive criticism on road transportation in media round the year, arranging different programs against road accidents by different social organizations, conducting mobile courts against faulty vehicles and fake driving licenses were among the reasons, he said.
